The sums of money to be paid each member state, which will come out of Apple's revenue from the EU, will only be made known after the commission has carried out its annual check on the impact of European competition rules on companies. Apple will be issued a fine of €50m (£44m) on each of the three charges brought by the commission. The first two relate to the iPhone, the third to the App Store. A handful of other companies had previously been found to be in breach of the EU's competition rules. French group Alcatel was fined £9.5m in 2009 and US companies NEC (£9.5m), and Microsoft (£10.5m) were hit with fines in 2008. Apple were initially given 30 days to respond to the commission, but were granted a six-month extension to respond. A year has now passed, and Apple has now been found to have infringed three EU laws in the first instance. Markus Soeder, competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia, said: "The commission strongly condemns the illegal behaviour by Apple to the benefit of its competitors, which has led to a violation of EU antitrust rules. "This decision is based on clear evidence of persistent and widespread attempts by Apple to raise the prices of standard technical components for iPhone and iPad. It affects almost every smartphone and tablet operating system sold in the EU." Apple is the first company to be fined in relation to its practices in its contract manufacturing of handsets. The commission's general counsel, Joaquin Almunia, said the size of the fine had been decided by the commission after the weighing up of the "elements of the case" which may form the basis for future fines. Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement
